My husband died in 2016. Can I deduct his funeral expenses on our joint return for that year?

Sorry for your loss, but unfortunately, funeral expenses cannot be claimed as an income tax deduction. If the value of your husband’s estate was large enough to require the filing of a federal estate tax return, then funeral expenses can be deducted on that return, Form 706.
